Handicapped by History
In the article "Handicapped by History" by Loewen and his key term heroification is introduced. According to Loewen, "heroification is a degenerative process that makes people over into heroes". In history textbooks that we use to learn history doesn't quite covers the whole truth. They should include not only on what they achieved but also how hard they worked and put effort into it even to overcome their obstacles to achieve their goals. I have chosen the Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen twins as my public figure image to represents an example of heroification and demonization. Through mass media today many different movie and sports stars are known as whatever the paparazzi thought of the pictures they took. I have picked the image of the Olsen twin's movie New York Minute. Ashley is wearing elegant and classy looking style clothes and Mary-Kate is wearing
And as for this image of Olsen twins, we see a lot of their pictures through ads. I think the audience of this image would be the teenage girls. Even history textbooks leave out important information about famous person. Ashely is wearing pink proper attire jacket with elegant knew-covering skirt with high heels like a business woman. For example for Helen Keller, we only know her as overcoming the hard obstacles, but we really don't know much about what her achievements were. Mass media quickly finds very small flaws about celebrities. Because the Olsen twins are much like a beauty role model for teenage girls. The background is the subways and sewers of Manhattan, New York City. On the other hand Mary-Kate is wearing ripped jeans with flip-flips, bright red hat wearing tilted, and a black shirt worn on top of white long-sleeved shirt like a punk band girl. Because Olsen twins were around us through media since they were babies, they are very known. punk rock star style kind of clothes. In the article "Handicapped by History", Loewen says "Denying students the humanness of Keller, Wilson, and others keeps students in intellectual immaturity. It perpetuates what might be called a Disney version of history" (Loewen 476). Many teenage girls look at twins as a beauty role model which can be exemplary of heroification.
