The Desire to Read

             In a world of video games and television, getting kids to enjoy reading may seem impossible. By turning the television and video games off, the children will become curious for something else to do. Some kids are naturally born interested in books and some are not. It takes patience and understanding of a child to get them interested in reading.
             Helping your children to enjoy reading is one of the most impmortant things you can do as a parent. Kids learn reading skills in school but they often think of reading as work and not pleasure. As a result, they lose their desire to read. it is the curiousity and interest that is used in reading and relating skills successfully. I would like to share with you a few suggestions that will help put the desire to read back into a child's life.
             the most effective way to spark a child's interest is to read out loud to them. While reading, change your voice for each individual character. Using different levels of your voice adds extra excitement for the child. Allow the small child to smell, touch, and even taste the book. Doing this will help the child to develop strong attachments.
             To get your child interested in books, explore the child's favorite things or hobbies. Borrow or buy books that cover their favorite things. It also comes in handy if you as a parent, like the book. If the book seems boring, put it down and find another book that seems more interesting.
             One last suggestion to spark a child's interest in reading would be to take your young child to a story time at the local libray. It will give the child a chance to hear someone else's voice narrating. The quiet time spent with your child will give you a little down time as well. After story time, visit the children's section and pick out a couple of books to take home and read until the next story time.
