She first began her inquiry into the gang scene while working at a magazine called L.A. Weekly. She started out doing interviews for other articles that had mentioned gangs and her curiosity prompted her to do research in preparation for a piece she was currently undertaking at L.A. Weekly. Her journalistic adventures brought her into a very closed and dangerous world that few outsiders have ever delved into. While on her investigation Bing interviewed many of the reputable gangsters that occupied these bullet hole ridden neighborhoods. The testimonies of these thugs speak for themselves. Violence is as normal as getting up taking a shower and going to work. Struggling to escape the violence and drugs, some of them opt for education, pinning their hopes on college; others are caught up in the violence that is common to the neighborhood.
