Human Cloning

             Human cloning is one of the world's biggest issues today. Before humans can consider the cloning of one another, they will have to question the concepts of right and wrong. The world has debated the implications of human cloning since 1997 when scientists at the Roslin Institute in Scotland produced Dolly, a cloned sheep. In the world today, public opinion about human cloning is vastly divided. Reproductive human cloning should be totally and one hundred percent banned due to the potential devastation it could cause. Therapeutic human cloning, on the other hand, should be pushed forward at a slow and steady pace.
             The supporters for reproductive human cloning argue that human cloning should be allowed, as the research may have the potential to eliminate many of the world's problems such as animal extinction and can benefit humankind in many ways. I can understand why many people believe that scientists are trying to play God by creating life, but humans have been doing this for years by other means. In his essay, "Playing God: Has Science Gone Too Far," Jeff Lyon states that "different people simply have different beliefs about how life came to exist and where humans fit in the grand design" (494). I believe that God gave humans "free will" so that they could grow and learn. This does not mean that I agree with the concept of reproductive cloning, but rather that I understand where the opposition is coming from. The opposers for therapeutic human cloning argue that human cloning should not be allowed. They feel that it is wrong to mimic natural creation. They also feel that scientists will want to push the limits even further once they have perfected therapeutic cloning.
