A Glimpse At An Honorable Man

             William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is a classic play about a group of conspirators and their rise against the future king, Julius Caesar. Marcus Brutus, one of the conspirators, is the key player in the events that surround Caesar's death. Many of his characteristics allow him to be the key player, and they set him apart from all of the other conspirators. Brutus' conscience, honorable tendencies, and strong relationship with Caesar, distinguish him in such a way as to make him the most important player in the events leading up to and following the death of his friend Caesar.
             Brutus's relationship with Caesar is very important to his allegiance with the conspirators. From the very beginning, it becomes apparent that Brutus' true loyalties lie with Rome. Even though he loves Caesar very much, his love is for Rome. During an interaction with Cassius, Brutus voices his concern about Caesar becoming king: "What means this shouting? I do fear the people Choose Caesar for their king"(I, ii, 84-85). Cassius then replies with a question. He asks Brutus whether or not he would like to see Caesar crowned king. Brutus responds to Cassius by saying, "I would not [have Caesar king], Cassius, yet I love him well"(I, ii, 88). These short passages from the play perfectly show Brutus' relationship with Caesar and his feelings towards him. He loves Caesar so much that his heart tells him he should support Caesar in his path to the throne unconditionally. He knows, however, that it would be a terrible thing for Rome if Caesar becomes king. This opinion further takes shape while he is in his orchard. He fears that once Caesar is at the top he will become corrupt because he simply has no place higher to ascend. In other words, once he becomes king he can't get any higher in rank.
