A Bronx Tale Analysis

In the movie, the 1960's are portrayed with reality as the viewer is taken to East 187th Street in the Bronx, New York. The Fordham neighborhood shown is highly populated by citizens of Italian decent, and a strong cultural social bond exists in the streets. Children play stickball on corners as older members of the community hustle to earn money. From legitimate business (like the fruit vendors) to illicit workings (bookmaking), everyone is busy with some form of social advancement. On the corner stands the kingpin of the neighborhood. This person (Sonny) is the boss of a local mob type operation. This neighborhood is held in fear of Sonny's actions, and yet motivated by respect and admiration for the man. The social benefits are immediate and apparent from the bookmaking and gaming occurring at the corner bar, to the protection of the neighborhood from other groups. Members of the community come together to assemble at the bar, further connecting and strengthening the social bond of the Italian citizens. From the movie, much pride is taken in the heritage and the culture of the Italian people, and this is perpetuated by the success of the organized crime group in the area.

Sonny, on the other hand, commanded and received respect from all who knew him, even from those that feared him. " The culture that Calegero is subject to does not show him what success really means. "A Bronx Tale" proved Cloward and Ohin theory that your community which demonstrates nothing but criminal activity will risk those in the community to become criminals themselves. One of the young boys, Calegero dreamed of the day that Sonny would look at him just one. Calegero's friends planned an assault on a black community. It was Calegero's friends who beat up an African American who was riding his bicycle through their neighborhood. Calegero who spent the most time with Sunny, was the one who proved that the criminal way was not the way to go. His friends were on their way to their neighborhood, to throw homemade bottle bombs at them in retaliation for coming into their neighborhood. Who did he want to be when he grew to manhood? Sonny made it clear to Calegero that he spent his life looking over his shoulder. The Fordham neighborhood shown is highly populated by citizens of Italian decent, and a strong cultural social bond exists in the streets. Sutherland's theory was also apparent in the movie at the beginning of the movie when the group of boys where young and they were doing imitations of the different group leaders. Sonny's actions and presence are seen in retrospect to those hardworking citizens, who long for a piece of the wealth. All the boys admired him while others in town feared him. However, many people in these types of communities realize too late and are influenced by their surroundings to live a life of criminal activity. Although he smiled on the outside, he felt like he was dying on the inside.
