Brave New World vs Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Everybody seeks truth, some seek absolute factual truth and some people seek truths based on what they want to believe and what makes them comfortable. The novels The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Hr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson and Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley are similar because they talk about a person protecting their reputation and outward appearance. These novels are also contrasting because the characters find different truths and deal with them in different ways. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a novel about a man who takes on the role of investigator yet has problems handling the truth about his case. He discovers a truth so menacing that he is quiet with the information and sure of himself when he finally decides to share it with the authorities. Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850 and had no other siblings. He suffered from poor health as a child and missed school regularly. He went to Edinburgh University at seventeen and soon discovered his hostility towards his parents. He then adopted the role of liberal bohemian and took up the study of law, though he knew he would never practice. Brave New World is a novel about an outsider's experience with the World State and how he struggl

People focus on their outward appearances to maintain their reputations. "Suppose it were as you suppose, supposing Dr. If your master has fled or is dead, we may at least save his credit. "His back was horizontally streaked with crimson, and from weal ran thin trickles of blood"(Huxley 248). These two novels contrast because Utterson avoids the scandal and finds truth whereas John finds scandal and avoids the truth. Utterson then convinces himself that Jekyll is murdered, and not the man behind the voice. He will never be fulfilled and he knows that. Utterson discovers the truth about his client, insists on propriety and finds ways to over come his worst nightmares. In the end John is unable to cope with the truths of life, so he takes his own. Jekyll to have been--well, murdered what could induce the murderer to stay? That won't hold water; it doesn't commend itself to reason"(Stevenson 48). He no longer has the strength to fight an entire world. The World State predestined their people to maintain control and their reputations as "Great World Leaders"(Huxley 7). The reasoning for this is so people within the classes do not get out of line. Jekyll is a scientific genus and will go down in history that way, thanks to Mr.
