Beowulf vs Modern Hero
In most instances, heroes exemplify not only what society considers remarkable and impossible feats, but also the ideals of that society. Over time, the definition of a hero has changed concurrently with the values, morals, and challenges of humanity. Presently, Webster's Dictionary defines a hero as, "An illustrious warrior; a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities; and one that shows great courage". In the eighth century, a hero was defined by his courage, constancy, and self-sacrifice. The epic poem "Beowulf", one of the first works of English literature, chronicles the adventures of Beowulf, the perfect example of an Anglo-Saxon epic hero. The poem explores Beowulf's heroism in three progressively difficult feuds against Grendel, Grendel's mother, and a dragon. With every victory, Beowulf further validates his place as a hero in the hearts and minds of Geats and Danes alike. In defining a hero, there are three fulfillments to evaluate. Beowulf believed that he would know before he went into battle if he was going to die and subsequently had "courage". Heroes, modern and premodern, have kept people safe, defended the weak, and fought when few others would. Beowulf, one of the most famous heroes of an epic, lives in a time when the problems of society were not terrorism, disease, or injustice. Today, heroes do not have to be physically strong; they are emotionally and intellectually strong. Heroes will always be honored for their courage and valor. It is possible to argue that modern heroes are even more courageous than heroes like Beowulf, because, unlike Beowulf, they do not believe in "wyrd" or fate. The meaning of a hero has changed very little since the time of Beowulf, but the "villain" has. Just as Beowulf is, modern heroes will be remembered and passed on through legends. Be it Batman or Beowulf, a hero is looked up to and lionized. Stories of Beowulf were passed on through oral history whereas, modern heroes are reported by newspapers, radio, and television, and known throughout the world. These traits combine with his inspiration and overcoming of obstacles to create a perfect Anglo-Saxon hero. The modern hero does not face the same problems as Beowulf. iffer in their culture's needs, and therefore their definition of a hero, they are both, in quintessence, very similar characters. Beowulf and modern heroes are very similar in their bravery, selflessness, and the want of justice.
