Beowulf vs Modern Hero

             In most instances, heroes exemplify not only what society considers remarkable and impossible feats, but also the ideals of that society. Over time, the definition of a hero has changed concurrently with the values, morals, and challenges of humanity. Presently, Webster's Dictionary defines a hero as, "An illustrious warrior; a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities; and one that shows great courage". In the eighth century, a hero was defined by his courage, constancy, and self-sacrifice. The epic poem "Beowulf", one of the first works of English literature, chronicles the adventures of Beowulf, the perfect example of an Anglo-Saxon epic hero. The poem explores Beowulf's heroism in three progressively difficult feuds against Grendel, Grendel's mother, and a dragon. With every victory, Beowulf further validates his place as a hero in the hearts and minds of Geats and Danes alike. In defining a hero, there are three fulfillments to evaluate. The person must overcome extremely difficult obstacles, show great courage, empower and inspire the people, and typify the traits of a hero. Though Beowulf and the modern hero both differ in their culture's needs, and therefore their definition of a hero, they are both, in quintessence, very similar characters.
             Beowulf, one of the most famous heroes of an epic, lives in a time when the problems of society were not terrorism, disease, or injustice. At that time, people worried about rival armies and great monsters. Consequently, when Beowulf heard that a demonic beast named Grendel was terrorizing the mead hall of the king of the Danes King Hrothgar, he gathered his thanes and set out to kill the beast and become a hero.
