Non-verbal communication in our culture After a week of unobtrusive data gathering, I realized non-verbal communication is very important to our society. Men and women alike, spend hours using non-verbal communication. Hand gestures, eye contact, and public touching are the most prominent forms of non-verbal communication. Actions tend to speak louder than words in certain situations. I love people and I enjoy using non-verbal communication. My son says when I give him the "evil" eye he knows to stop what he is doing. In our culture, I believe non-verbal communication is extremely important. I would not be able to carry on a conversation without the use of my hands. Furthermore, non-verbal communication can be more effective than verbal communication. Another non-verbal communication that I use is hugging. My children know when mom is upset. I noticed that I use a lot of non-verbal communication with my children. Moreover, I use a lot of hand gestures when I am trying to explain something. Moreover, the male subjects are more likely to initiate public touching and the female subjects are more likely to use hand gestures. During the week that I was retrieving my data, I paid close attention to the non-verbal communication that I use. I cannot picture our society without non-verbal communication. As Homo sapiens we tend to be relationship oriented.
