Richard Nixon

             "I welcome this kind of examination because people have got to know whether or not their President is a crook. Well I'm not a crook." That is one of Richard Nixon's quotes after being accused of the Watergate scandal. Eventually it was proven that he was a crook so he resigned before he became impeached. When people think of Richard Nixon, the first thing that comes to mind is the Watergate scandal unfortunately. Well he did make a huge mistake in doing that, but he also did many other positive things throughout his life that made him a great man and a superb President.
             Richard Nixon was born on January 9th, 1913 in California. He was raised as an evangelical Quaker by his mother, who hoped he would become a Quaker missionary some day. His family was unable to afford him leaving home to go to college so he attended Whittier College and then later on received a scholarship to Duke University. During World War 2, Nixon served in the Navy. Superiors praised him as an excellent leader and officer. Nixon learned to play poker in the Navy and he became known as the best poker player in the Navy. He won almost 10,000 dollars during the war.
             In 1946, Nixon was elected to the United States House of Representatives from California. He supported the Republican Political Party. Four years later, he was elected to the Senate, where he helped sponsor a bill that gave Alaska and Hawaii statehood. When he was only thirty-nine years old, he was elected Vice President under Dwight D. Eisenhower. Nixon served two consecutive terms as Vice President under Eisenhower.
             However, there was a bump in the road to Nixon's Presidency when he lost in 1960 to John F. Kennedy. Many people believed he lost because of a debate where he refused to wear television makeup and was feeling very sick so he sweated heavily and looked very nervous.
