Gains in Janie's marriages
Until death do you part. Marriage is a strong commitment and relationship between two people sharing the rest of their lives with each other. In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie Crawford journeys on an emotional roller coaster in her marriages that allow her self-confidence to boost. Janie wishes her relationships between her husbands were as ideal as a relationship between a bee and the blossom. Instead, the marriages help her seek self discovery. Through verbal, emotional, and physical abuse shown by Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Tea Cake, she finds herself by revealing an optimistic and strong woman side of her. Abuses in these various relationships help Janie develop as a character, becoming more independent, speaks out, and Janie's first husband, Logan Killicks, uses verbal abuse towards Janie. Being forced to marry Logan Killicks, Janie's Nanny desired to leave her granddaughter with protection form the outside world before her death. Arranging for Janie's financial security and protection from the outside world, Nanny forces Janie's first relationship in womanhood. Logan verbal abuses her after a short year of marriage together, when he says, "you oughta be able tuh tote it inside" (H
A mule is unfertile because it is a mix between a horse and a donkey. Janie's emotional roller coaster helps her reflect on the individual she is and grows. He is on a mission to build a town of colored folks as he meets Janie on his way. [as] her image of Jody tumbled down and shattered" (Hurston, 72). She matures into an independent woman ready and aware of verbally and emotional abuse. Marriage is a seriously commitment between two people that should be heavily discuss because as they say, "until death do you part. Tea Cake is Janie's first real love and offered her the idealism of a perfect marriage between the bee and the flower. He claims that Janie is weak, by getting "uh mule all gentled up so even uh woman kin handle 'im" (Hurston, 27). Janie learns from this emotional mistreatment that some men only strive for their notions in power and male dominance. " However marriages nowadays do not take on the traditional values that were once cherished and rare privileges. Janie's experience with Logan Killicks helps her grow with Joe Starks and his emotional abuse. Janie embarks on a twenty year marriage with Joe, or Jody. As time wear the couple, Jody criticizes Janie on everything she does.
