A Typical Teenager in John Updike's

In today's world there are many stereo types for people young and old. In John Updike's, "A&P", the main character, Sammy, is an example of a typical teenage boy for that time, as well as now. Though Sammy seems to be a mature young man trying to make some money, his intense fascination with the three girls, his attitude, and his unrealistic thoughts all support that he is in fact just a typical teenager. Fascination with the opposite sex is one of the main characteristics of being a young man in his teenage years. For Sammy his fascination begins because of the three young girl's apparel. Most everything that is considered in a teenagers life starts with what is to be worn and how it will appeal. If a young man sees three young woman that have some inkling of attraction in them, it is a typical teenage reaction to study the woman. Sammy is so taken by the young woman that describes in detail each of their bathing suits. He studied each girl up and down and even the way they walked. At the teenage age, comparability is always in motion. Most young boys will look at who is where the best looking su

Sammy also had unrealistic thoughts about himself as is shown in the following lines from the text. Sammy does not show much verbal attitude towards the girls. Something very common in a typical teenager. In Sammy's mind he was sweet and thought about everything, but when his boss shamed the three girls Sammy became outwardly confident that he could be their hero and that he was not afraid of anyone. Sammy even examined the attitude between the girls. It is mostly inner thoughts that make up his attitude. His attitude was that he wanted these girls to notice him as he noticed them. Sammy imagine what other girls thought of the tall one, and what the fat girl really wanted to do. Most teenagers always think of what others are thinking and what would happen if they did this. To Sammy the girls were everything for those moments. Sammy, the main character from John Updike's, "A&P", was a typical teenager in many ways even though he seemed to be a very mature young man who is making a living by working in the local store. He was quick to act before he thought. Fortunately, there are many traits that help define one. Hopefully, one may now say that deep inside of him there is a just be a typical teenage boy. Noticing every little thing from their cloths to their attitude in the manner that Sammy did is a very typical for a young teenage boy.
