The Raven
All over the world Edgar Allen Poe is recognized for his wonderful stories and poems, and one of his most famous poems was "The Raven." "The Raven" discusses the feelings that many people carry inside, including sorrow, grief, and loneliness. Even after many years people are still able to relate this poem to themselves in many ways. If the audience of this poem just reads the words, they will miss the true deeper meaning that someone can get out of this story. The poem starts out with a man who is trying to distract himself from the feelings that comes with a dead family member by reading. As he sits there he hears quiet tapping on the door, he doesn't want to go see who is making the noise so he ignores the sound. This story is able to connect with everyone because no matter who you are, you can always relate to the meaning in some way. As the poem continues, the man learns that these feeling might never go away because of his deep love of his wife. " Talking to the bird symbolizes how the man must consult his inner self to find strength that will help him overcome these hardships. The raven, which is sitting outside the window flies inside. This is like the man's feelings finally being let out. However, the tapping starts again and this time from the window. he goes to see who is at the door, he is left with only darkness and his feelings remain inside of him. The reason the genre is horror, is because the mood of the poem is dark and creepy and often words are used such as "bleak" and "dreary" which give the reader an unwelcoming and depressing feeling. This poem also talks about a sad time in the man's life which he is very miserable and lonely. This poem has universal appeal because everyone has times in their life when sorrow and grief are the main feelings in one's heart. While to many this poem seams like a sad story of a man, it really can show the true strength that can come out of the inside of a person when they are forced to get through the hardest times of their life. Also, poems are often interpreted in different ways, and people who are at different times in their life, may find different meanings in the words.
