Child abuse

             Child Abuse is such a disturbing subject. Many parents throughout the world cringe when they hear this word. Ironically, one of Sweden's biggest problems is child abuse and trying to stop it. Despite living in such a prosperous wonderful country, children in Sweden are encountering all types of child abuse. There are several organizations and laws being passed that are against child abuse, and feel very strongly about putting an end to it.
             First, child abuse is a term, which describes all the ways in which a child's development and health are damaged by the actions, or inactions of others. Child abuse is crucial problem in the Sweden as well as countries on the Scandinavian Peninsula. According to a survey conducted in 1985 by the Children's Ombudsman one of every ten girls and one out of every thirty boys have been sexually abused before the age of eighteen. Thirty-two percent of the offenders were found to be men under the age of twenty-one. The average age of a victim is 9.6 years of age. 1/3 is physical abused and 1/3 or emotionally abused. The Children's Ombudsman, which is an active organization to stop child abuse, is very active in urban areas. They mostly focus on cities where the government is not doing enough to stop child abuse. Another organization that is trying to lower the amount of child abuse is "Save the Children." This program is held throughout the world, saving the many abused children and finding homes for them. They do many outreaches throughout Sweden and the Scandinavian Peninsula. Furthermore, the Eastern European Child Abuse Project has also taken action. In Stockholm, Sweden they sent two psychiatrists, Dr. Pamela Sicher and Dr. Owen Lewis have been working in Stockholm since 1995. They have trained many people to do outreaches throughout Sweden as well as educate professionals such as teachers and doctors.
