Taking Sides: Causes of the Civil War

Taking Sides: Slavery as a Cause of the Civil War

The cause of the Civil War has long been debated. Many historians believe the cause to be psychological, economic, political or social. As they argue over these elements, many arguments rise from one sole issue. This core issue is slavery. Slavery emanates as the core influence which leads to the political unrest, the social and psychological turbulence and the economic matters that are the true causes of the Civil War. Although these elements are all very relevant and all had a great deal to do with the beginnings of the Civil War, they all would not have come about in the first place, had it not been for the initial disagreement over slavery. The issue of slavery had very much to do with the splitting of the states. First of all, the states split between slave-holders and abolitionists. They also split because of violent occurrences between both sides. And finally, they fought for pride and loyalty to their side. These are not by any means the only causes of the war, but are without a doubt some of the maj

. . .
It is indisputable that when a group stands together and that group is attacked, the members of that group are going to work together to protect each other.

The people of the United States began to divide when the two groups began to form strong opinions over the infamous issue of slavery. Some just did not like the change; they either did not want to lose their workers because they were freed, or did not want to lose their jobs to the freed Africans. Whether they be division in opinion, acts of hostility, or pride towards one’s side, they all kindled the fire of Civil War amongst our country; and each of these aspects would not have existed were it not for that one word we all cannot stand to hear, “slavery”. ” (A Declaration of the Causes which Impel the State of Texas to Secede from the Union. Acts of violence and hostility were beginning to occur everywhere. This sense of pride and loyalty also is what led most to fight in the war once it had started. Many of the people on the other side of the fence believed that slavery was a cruel and shameful part of our country that should be fixed immediately. Even though most may not have had a strong opinion on slavery one way or the other, they still found it extremely important that they must stand up for their side. When these two divisions of the Nation emerged, each side had a great sense of pride and loyalty towards their side. )

When there are two sides that believe in two different things, and believe in them with all their might, they are willing to use anything, including violence in order to get their point across and to “win” the argument. This disagreement led to several other causes.

When the two sides of this ongoing argument progressed in their hatred for each other, the inevitable began.

“They [the North] have invaded Southern soil and murdered unoffending citizens, and…have bestowed praise upon the actors and assassins in these crimes, while the governors of several of their States have refused to deliver parties implicated and indicted for participation in such offenses, upon the legal demands of the States aggrieved.
