Sociology
When first signing up for sociology it started off just as another class I needed to take towards my degree. Not once did I think to myself that I would enjoy or learn anything from this class that would benefit me in my everyday life. There have been many things while taking this course that I have attainted. We first started off class learning about the basics of sociology. What is Sociology? I have come to the understanding that sociology has many meanings. Sociology is the scientific study of society, it is the science of society, and is the scientific study of man in his social relationships. Sociology is a very important subject for humans to continue to study. Only good can come out of studying how our societies work and change throughout the years. We then learned about the differences between animal society and human society. I have come to learn many differences between the two. One factor being that in human society we coordinated our lives consciously, where non-humans base there survival in instinct. Humans have a large brain compared to their relatively small body mass. A whale has one of the largest brains but it is mostly used to direct its muscles, due to its large body.
Culture is the beliefs, skills, ideas, and patterns of a social group. Learning about the prejudice and discrimination made me think back to years ago when there were discrimination of African-Americans and how even now there isn't as much of it around but there is still many people who may not display there attitudes publicly. Putting things in my life into perspective, such as how I act around other people may make other individuals think differently of me. We discussed how in sociology we seek explanations in social groups, whereas in psychology we seek explanations within the 2individual. Culture is divided into two different aspects, one being material culture which refers to the physical creations of humans. This class has helped me better understand society and how there are so many different aspects to it. For example if I went to a funeral and was being loud and disruptive people are going to look at me and create a stereotype of me. At one specific shot you could see her trying to pull him away as if she was trying to relay the message that she did not want him to leave. I also learned that sociologist have to test their theories just as a scientist. Some things that shocked me were when I found out that minors were getting younger in first time meetings with the police. We discussed many different social groups including closed, ethnic, formal, informal, horizontal, in-formal, and open groups. Which was the process by which we acquire a sense of self from the way others view us. Another subject that we spoke about was the talk of immigration in the United States and how we are considered a melting pot, meaning that when people intermingle culturally. The topic that affected me the most had to be the "wild child". The children I have worked with seem to take a much longer time to get to the point that gene was.
