The old man in the sea
Throughout Ernest Hemingway's novel, THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, three specific themes are developed. To begin with, Santiago is compared as the christ figure. Moreover, the good and bad aspects of man's relationship with nature. At last, Santiago's illistration as the Hemingway hero. Santiago as the collation to the christ figure has had a great impact in this novel. There are various elements that convey santiago as the Christ figure. First of all, Santiago and the Christ figure were both fishermen. This can be seen as Manolin says for encouragement to Santiago, " Thre are many good fishermen and some great ones. But there is only you."(pg.23) Also as Santiago says out loud to himself " You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell food. You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman." (pg.105) Second, Santiago and the christ figure both had disciples and followers. This can be seen as when in doubt about catching a fish tatement was conveyed, " The old man had taught the boy how to fish and the boy loved him." As it is presented while Santiago in the process of catching a fish announces, " I shouldn't have gone out so far fish, neither for you nor for me.
