Charles Dickens:
Charles Dickens has written some of the most astonishing novels of his time. Two of the most greatest novels are Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. These two novels have a lot in common. They share many similarities as well as differences. Charles Dickens can also be compared to the lives of the two main characters in these two novels. His two most popular novels Great Expectations and Oliver Twist represent many of the differences and similarities found within his work and his life. Many similarities are shared within these two astonishing novels partially because they both reflect some of the same experiences that Charles Dickens encountered during in his life. Charles Dickens, son of Elizabeth and John Dickens, was born on February 7th of 1812 in Landport, Portsmouth (Swisher 13). His father, John, was a clerk at the Navy Pay Office. In 1817 John moved his family to Chatham and worked in the navel dockyard (Epstein 18). This is where Charles experienced most of his greatest childhood memories. He was an energetic determined young boy. Like Pip in Great Expectations Charles had began to develop a sense of himself (Epstein 17). As a child Charles Dickens had dreams of becoming a novelist in the future. His early happy years
By using different writing techniques Dickens experiences were shown through the two novels. Dickens related to the two characters in more ways than one. Oliver used Fagin as a means of escaping misery, while Pip used Magwitch as an escape from poverty and starvation. Most of the plot in Oliver Twist was created through memories of Charles Dickens's childhood, working at a factory and rubbishing through garbage to make a living (Glancy 3-5). The story follows Oliver as he escapes his meaningless life and runs away to London at such a young age. Oliver was born in a work house and was treated with cruelty (Dickens, Oliver 27). His imagination led him to create a life of his own. In London he befriends a young man named Jack Dawkins, who later introduces him to Fagin, a receiver of stolen goods who maintains a gang of pickpockets (Karson 33, Epstein 82). Through much agony Pip's friends rescue him and the two convicts die, Magwitch and his friend. Magwitch is then caught, arrested and sent back to the ship. Pip is a very curious boy, and Oliver is extremely well spoken. Both books seemed to have much in common such as the feelings and emotions shared by the two main characters.
