Animal Farm- Explain the target of Orwell

             Communism had taken off in Russia, when George Orwell decided to write Animal Farm. Orwell was very critical of communism and the Russian revolution. Animal Farm was a means by which he could express his opinions. Although Animal Farm is presented as a simple fable, where a group of animals overthrow the farm owner and attempt to run it themselves, it is interpreted as a satire about communism. Orwell describes Animal Farm as "the only on of my books I really sweated over." It had to be very carefully written, so that the reader can recognise many different layers of meaning. In Animal Farm, Orwell did not only criticise communism, but also the use of propaganda, and prominent people from the Russian revolution, such as Stalin. Orwell has carefully used satirical techniques as a way of making these points recognisable in the book.
             Communism is one theme in Animal Farm which Orwell has been critical of. Orwell tries to show how communism does not solve a country's problems and can easily become corrupt. Animalism, the system by which Animal Farm runs, is used to represent communism. Animalism was based on a speech given by Old Major, a wise old pig, much like communism was based on the teachings of Karl Marx. Animalism was designed to be a fair society where all animals would be "rich and free." Although communism, like animalism, had good intentions, it slowly became corrupt, because it can only be as good as the people running it. For example, seven commandment simplifying animalism were drawn up. The commandments, such as 'All animals are equal', were designed to lead a fair society. However, as animalism became corrupt, the commandments were changed to suit those in power. The above commandment was changed to 'All animals are equal, but some arte more equal than others.'
