The Yellow Wallpaper

             "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, takes us into the life of Jane. She starts out quite sane expressing her feelings toward her current situation. Eventually Jane's life takes a turn for the worst. Gilman takes the reader on a slow, steady ride to an unexpected climax. The yellow wallpaper, isolation from family, and the restriction of freedom to express herself through writing are only a few factors that lead to Jane's madness.
             As Jane gets settled in to the house she starts to notice her surroundings. One thing in particular that catches her eye is the yellow wallpaper. Jane at first states, "I never saw a worse paper in my life"(432). She goes on to explain the color is repellent, and the wallpaper has a sprawling, flamboyant pattern. After having nothing else to concentrate on, the yellow wallpaper starts to form a image of a woman trapped behind bars, creeping. Jane seems to personify the wallpaper looking for a way to release this trapped woman.
             The protagonist spends a lot of the time alone. She wishes to visit her cousin Henry and Julie, but is told she needs her rest. The only other people she has contact with is her husband, which spends the majority of his time at work and his sister Jennie who takes care of the house. Mary watches the baby due to the fact Jane is nervous around him. Throughout the story limited human contact and nothing to tend to leaves the protagonist sensing she is useless. However, the woman trapped behind the bars is in need of help.
             Writing was once a part of Jane's life until the isolation. Thinking this would be the perfect opportunity to write, writing is prohibited. Jane states, "I think sometimes that if I were only well enough to write a little it would relieve the press of ideas and rest me"(433), though when she tries, it exhausts her having to sneak around to do it.
