Flannery O'Connor: Good Country People

             In Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People", the character Hulga, by loosing her artificial leg in the loft was changed. The catalyst for this change is Pointer, whom Hulga sees as a "good country boy" but, in reality, is quite deceiving in nature. This analysis will focus on Pointers request of wanting to see where Hulga's wooden leg joins and end with Pointer leaving the loft.
             In the start of "Good Country People" Hulga, even with her handicap, tries her best to be an independent person. She makes a point out of being a harsh and unpleasant person to those around her. She "stumped into the kitchen in the morning"(248) making an awful noise just to irritate others. Hulga in spite of all of her knowledge from many years in school refuses to believe in abstract ideas such as love and evil. It is through these disbeliefs that she is so easily tricked but Pointer. Hulga essentially seems to have faith in nothing. She believes that she has all the answers and will use her vast knowledge to seduce and educate young Pointer. Hulga uses her book knowledge as a reason for not believing in a god, in contrast to Pointer who rejected faith because it got in the way of his enjoyment of life. It is ironic that she went in trying to trick Pointer while she was the one being tricked. The title itself "Good Country People" was created and used throughout the story to provide an irony.
             Pointers originally request Hulga to show where her wooden prosthetic leg joins her real leg, shortly after that progressing for a request to take it right off. He plays with Hulga's emotions by using the word "love" to deceive her "I just want to know if you love me or dowitcher?"(259). He wants her to prove this love by fulfilling his requests. Before the incident in the loft, no one had ever touched Hulga's wooden leg "no one ever touched it but her"(259...
