Deadly Unna

"Deadly Unna" tells a story about a teenage boy named Gary Black, who develops knowledge about racial prejudice in his town. He develops this awareness because of an aboriginal boy and girl. The novel shows us what actions he takes to deal with his feelings about this racism such as, attending Dumby Reds funeral even though he knew people didn't approve, stuck up for his beliefs with the aboriginals and also he cleaned the graffiti off the shed at the jetty.Gary's town is small and his community has lots of views and values about the aboriginal population. They are very critical and cruel when it comes to racism. The only relation the town has with the aboriginals of the Point is football, though the racial prejudice is still obvious. The town and the aborigines have a combined football team, as alone the people of the Port do not have enough players to make up a full team. When the new group of aboriginals start to play footy Blacky meets Dumby Red a great footballer, good at everything in fact, Blacky pretends he doesn't like him, Mainly because he is better than him at football, being an aboriginal it is hard for Blacky to comprehend and he becomes very envious, the fact that he is aboriginal is a good defens

When Dumby stands up for him against Mad Dog you can tell that Blacky is proud of being friends with Dumby. When it came to the award ceremony Blacky was traumatized to hear that the McRae medal had been won by Mark Arks, Blacky couldn't grope the fact that his town could go this far and be so racist, he then became really angry, Dumby had contributed so much to the team all season, he'd been a true team player and was the best, but the Port didn't admit it. e for Blacky to tell his friends he doesn't like him, but you can see that is not the real reason. Blacky stood up for himself and his beliefs against his father, which he would never usually do. It's bullshit, that's Dumbys trophy," said Blacky, "Give it a rest", said Pickles. They also say that aborigines do not put oil or water in their cars, which is not true either. Even his mother makes out that she doesn't really support him going but deep down you can tell she is proud of him. The town make up jokes in the front bar about the aborigines, which are not true. Blacky's thoughts about prejudice in the town are confirmed after the football presentations. Even after his father had said this Blacky still stood up for his beliefs and continued to be consistent. "The first thing aborigines do when they get a new house is rip the doors off their things and smash all the windows off". Whilst after this event Blacky says he is going to quit it then shows he might return back to the team. The towns main goal was to win the football grand final.
