What Role Do Parents Play in the Education and Prevention of

             School violence is becoming more and more prevalent in today's society. People are talking about what needs to be done to help prevent this from becoming an everyday occurrence, looking to metal detectors for schools, profiling of who would be the most likely to commit such crimes, and changing the way violence is looked at by society as a whole. There needs to be a change within society itself, but also in suburban homes. Parents have never really been encouraged to teach their children ways of non-violent confrontation. A push needs to be created towards parents getting involved in their child's lives and knowing what is going on with their son or daughter. This is not only a way to help prevent the violence that plagues the schools of today but to help stop violence from occurring. Parents are the front line defense to helping put an end to school violence.
             To start, there has been an ongoing conversation between eight different authors dealing with the issue of school violence. Not every author in the conversation is talking directly about school violence, but their exigence has a significance to this conversation. James Paul Gee, the first author in the conversation, wrote "Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction". His purpose for writing the essay was to promote social change in the classes, yet he himself believes that once a person is born in to their primary discourse they will never be able to move from that discourse. Gee believes that there are other forms of discourse for each person, but these are the only forms of discourse that can be changed about that person. For example, a man is born an Irish Catholic, which would be his primary discourse, but has a job as a car salesman, also known as his secondary discourse.
