Slavery in Texas
Through out time, slavery has been around. From the Spanish, to the Indians, to the Texans all around the world where civilized nations rise, there was slavery and prejudice. Since 1540 though 1865 many events took place that marked history in time. Starting with the Spanish conquistadors, who brutalized the Indians in South America to gain control of precious metals, Hernan Cortez was one of the most brutal. He used to burn cities to destroy the Indian civilization because he thought the Indians were ignorant. In Texas, the Spanish decimated the Indian and swept them aside. The Spanish destroyed them by the cause of disease, Christianity, European technology, and fragmentation of population. Some Europeans recognized Indians for their culture, traditions, and their way of life. Yet, other Europeans considered Indians as subhuman, unworthy of human consideration. There was more strict prohibition of slaves. Anglos looked down on Mexicans as an inferior race, lazy, with a suspect religious belief, a strange language, and no understanding of real democracy. Hispanic citizens were outnumbered and mostly were mere laborers for white landowners. Indians may allow it; them leave Texas or be executed. Lamar thought the Indians had no rights to the land on which they lived. Lamar's Indian policies were different from Houston's. They survived by the help of religion. The Anglo Texans detested the Mexican troops quartered among them, as well as the practice of using the military to enforce civil law. The white Americans stepped into the picture to claim Texas territory to the United States. Whites could take it when ever they desired. Mexico came to its independence in 1810 searching for a reconquista. They were brutalized by anything even if it was right, if the owner thought otherwise, they would get violated. Mexico prohibited slavery all together. Mexicans required all settlers become Catholic.
