Should church and state separation be maintained?
             The controversy about the relation between public education and religion is perhaps one of the greatest debates of the United States. The open practice of religion in publicly funded schools is not a new debate, nor a simple one.
             The principle of separation between religion and government was a part of America's history for over a century before the Constitution was written. From its beginning the principle has often been expressed in terms of "separation of church and state." The First Amendment of the Constitution guarantees that all people have a right to worship or not worship the Creator, however they see fit. Whether they are Christians, Jews, Buddist, or even Atheist the government should have no place in that worship.
             The First Amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment or religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."(Alley, 13) but what did that mean? The first Admendment were designed to establish a separation of chruch and the national State. This separation was sto be unsured by denying to Congress the consitutional authority to pass legislation providing for the formal and legal union of any single church, religion, or sect with the Federal Government. (Cord, 5) In other words, the "establishment of religion" clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church. Under this clause the government cannot tell you when, where, what, or who to worship. The separation of Church and State should be maintained for the good of all people and their religion?
             The separation of church and state ensures that private citizens, when acting in the role of some government official, cannot have any aspect of their private religious beliefs imposed upon everyone else. School teachers cannot promote their religion to other people's c...
