Interracial couples are victims of group prejudice and stereotypes whereas the discrimination against either partner’s race may undermine perceptions of the couple as a unit. are still unfavorable by members of all races due to reasons such as they disrupt racial purity, destroy family traditions and create potential problems for the couples’ children. Additionally White males, who do most of the hiring, see them less threatening than a Black male.

Racism can also affect African American’s marital relationship through gender discrimination. They are both experiencing a lot of pressure from racism and should pull together to work against racism rather than let racism turn them against each other. Consequently, Black women have an easier time finding employment in corporate America than a Black male does. Because of the wife’s perceived favoritism in White society, jealousy can occur due to the husband’s feelings of inferiority. Rather than fight each other, they need to face the problem together and be supportive of one another’s decision and feelings. While the marriage will ultimately be affected by racism, the Black male is most likely going to be more directly affected by it through first-person experience thus depending on his wife. This is believed to be due to corporate America seeing black females as two minorities, thus making it easier to fulfill their quota. Internalization of stereotypes such as the domineering, promiscuous, loud Black female and irresponsible, sexually aggressive and ignorant Black male can cause conflict in the African American marital relationship. This is because throughout history, European American men have attempted to keep their women pure through the prohibiting of relations with African American men. An example of such a situation would be a married African American couple moving into a predominately White area in which they face discrimination from their neighbors.
