Charles Manson - Anything But Normal

            Charles Manson led a dark and dangerous life. He was raised by a prostitute and had a rough childhood. These troubles carried on well into his teenage years and continued into adulthood. His early years had tragically formed his corrupt life as an adult. Charles Manson has led an interesting life filled with many trips in and out of jail, twisted obsessions with death and satanic worship, and many gruesome killings.
             Charles Manson was born "no name Maddox" in a Cincinnati, Ohio hospital on November 12, 1934 (Brainy Encyclopedia). He was the illegitimate son of Kathleen Maddox who was a 16-year-old hooker. Charles received his last name "Manson" from one of Kathleen's many lovers that she encountered as a prostitute. She gave Charles that last name during a short period that she married the man, but there is no blood relation between Charles and his so-called "father" (Cielo Drive, 2). In 1936, Kathleen filed a paternity suit against "Colonel Scott" which gained her a final sum of 5 dollars per month up until 1954 when Scott had died. Three years later Kathleen and her brother were sentenced to 5 years in jail due to a gas station robbery they were in association with (Brainy Encyclopedia). Charles was sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle who were strictly religious and sadistic. Charles Uncle would constantly criticize him and call him a "sissy." In an act to try to make Charles "act more like a man," his Uncle dressed him up in girls clothing and sent him off to his first day of school. Soon after her release from prison in late 1944, Kathleen Maddox had her son returned to her although she was unfit to be a mother at the time. She was losing a constant battle of alcoholism and was still working her former practice of a prostitute. It was said that one night in a desperate struggle for alcohol, Kathleen attempted to trade Charles to a barmaid for a single pitcher of beer.
