Magic to Rule
Do you sometimes use magic to get what you want? Prospero, the leading character in Shakespeare's play The Tempest, used it to make himself powerful and the leader of an island that he was banished to. A utopia is a person's ideal place of life and leisure. Prospero's utopia involves him being king, his daughter Miranda marrying, and he having power over all of his subjects. The only thing is that he uses magic to attain these desires. His possession and use of magical knowledge renders him extremely powerful and not entirely sympathetic. Prospero's use of magic to get what he wants does make him a utopian ruler. Part of Prospero's utopian idea was to have complete control over all of his people. Ariel is also controlled by Prospero's magic. Prospero also used his magic so Ferdinand could find him. The sight of another person excited Caliban and he willingly served Prospero. "Where should this music be? I' th' air or/ th' earth?" (I.
