Magic to Rule

Do you sometimes use magic to get what you want? Prospero, the leading character in Shakespeare's play The Tempest, used it to make himself powerful and the leader of an island that he was banished to. A utopia is a person's ideal place of life and leisure. Prospero's utopia involves him being king, his daughter Miranda marrying, and he having power over all of his subjects. The only thing is that he uses magic to attain these desires. His possession and use of magical knowledge renders him extremely powerful and not entirely sympathetic. Prospero's use of magic to get what he wants does make him a utopian ruler. Part of Prospero's utopian idea was to have complete control over all of his people. He accomplished this when he was ruling the deserted island. He enslaved the only island native named Caliban. Caliban was half human and half monster. Caliban was on the island


On the other hand Ariel, who is a spirit, was saved by Prospero's magic and then enslaved by it. Prospero uses these characters to do everything that he will not. Afterwards Ariel talked to prospero about lifting the spell that was cast upon him and setting him free. During Prospero's quest to achieve his revenge on his brother Prospero was able to bring his eligible suitor to the island.
