What is the Human Genome Project?

The Humane Genome Project was an international and collaborative effort whose goal was to complete the mapping of the genes of all human beings. Genome is the word that encloses all of our genes. In a way, the HGP was the culmination of years and years of genetic research since 1911. The hereditary material of any living multicellular being is like a copy of DNA, which contains all our genes. The HGP researchers have been able to map the human genome with three ways: by determining the order, making maps to locate genes in major sections of our chromosomes, and producing linkage maps, through which doctors can be able to track inherited traits through generations. The HGP has revealed that there are between 30,000 and 40,000 human genes. The discovery of the DNA sequence has provided the word with specific information about the structure, organization and function of the human genes.
In February 2001, the first draft of the human genome was presented with 90% uncovered. A startling discovery was that there were fewer genes than estimated before. The full sequence was presented in April 2003. The Director of the NHGRI (National Human Genome Research Institute) called the genome a history book, with a narrative of the journey of our species through time, which will be able to give healthcare providers immense power to treat, prevent, and cure diseases. Some of the techniques used to construct a first draft of the human genome and that are also used to perfect it are: DNA sequencing, Yeast artificial chromosomes, electrophoresis, among others. The advanced methods for obtaining this information are necessary to be applied as soon as possible for the benefit of humanity. That is why an important part of the HGP is the ethical and legislative issues. Consequently, NHGRI is working on solving the ethical, legal and social issues. The wonderful progress made by the genome science has provided a lot of excitement because of its potential ...
