Eveline The Horse Dealer's Daughter

"Eveline" by James Joyce, is a fictional story of a young Irish girl and her attempt to leave behind her cold and dead life to live in beautiful, sunny Buenos Aires with her young lover. Now, if only she has the courage the make that jump and swallow her fear. The main character, Mabel, in "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" by D. H. Lawrence, tries to leave her poverty striken life by commiting suicide, where she would be united with her beloved mother who passed away years before. The reader reads these two stories with an understanding and compassion, while these two girls struggle for happiness and their place in the world. Eveline is a young Ireland native of 19, whose life is described by James Joyce as dutiful and lifeless. The story opens with her sitting by the windowsill, peering out into the concrete streets, while a dusty odor fills her nostrils. She watches through her window as the people she's known throughout her life leave, including her brother. Some leave to England, some travel south to mysterious islands, either way, these escapees never return. Mabel, the only female out of he four children, is finding it harder to adjust into a new life. He proposed marriage instantly, for if he waits too long, common sense will soon sink in. As a doctor, his job is to save lives, professionally. Her rejection of Frank was not only a rejection of love, but to reject the chance for a better life. For the first time in her life, she would take comfort in emotional and financial security. Frank would take her in his arms, hold her in his arms. She need not demean herself any more, going into shops and buying the cheapest food. " Mabel is a lonely woman, too proud for her own good, surrounded by three brothers who often isolate and poke fun at her. "Escape! She must escape! Frank would save her. She views the outside world through her windowsill, and that is enough for her.
