Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 27, 1910. When she was twelve, she felt the call of god and wanted to become a missionary. When she was eighteen, she left her family and joined the Sisters of Lorento, which was an Irish community of nuns in India. On May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta. Seeing all the poverty outside the convent made a huge impression on her and in 1948 she left the convent school to devote herself to working among the poorest people in Calcutta. She depended on Divine Providence and started a school for slum children. She was helped out by volunteers and was given financial support which helped her to spread her work.
             Her work has spread all over the world, including the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. They provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. They do relief work for natural catastrophes such as famine, epidemics and floods. They also have houses in North America, Europe, and Australia where they help alcoholics, the homeless and people suffering with AIDS.
             Mother Teresa's work has been recognized many times and she has received a numerous amount of awards including the Pope John XXIII Peaces Prize in 1971, the Nehru Prize in 1972, the Balzan Prize in 1979. and the Templetion and Magsaysay awards.
             Today the order works with other branches of Sisters and Brothers in many countries. In 1963 both the Contemplative branch of the Sisters and the Active branch of the Brothers was founded. In 1979 the Contemplative branch of the Brothers was added, and in 1984 the Priest branch was established.
