             One of the most influential aspects of business is marketing. Almost always, the success of a product or idea is based upon the marketing techniques. An average person living in North America is a constant target of marketing throughout the day. Many advertisements experienced by the average person are expressed through television. Television commercials are one of many techniques used to sell products. The objective of an advertisement is to attract customers and convince them to purchase a product. Materialism, the theory that physical well-being and worldly possessions constitute the greatest good and highest value in life, is often used by companies to promote their product, service or idea. Along with materialism, the idea of consumerism is also applied. Consumerism is defined as the theory that a progressively greater consumption of goods is economically beneficial. Aldous Huxley, a well known author of the past century, also inscribes the ideas of consumerism and materialism in his very famous novel, Brave New World. Hypnopaedia is a method of conditioning used in the Brave New World for humans. Consumerism and materialism serve as the foundation of the hypnopaedia teachings. North American television advertisements and hypnopaedia serve similar purposes, as they encourage materialism and consumerism, which distract their audience from rational thought.
             North American television commercials are very influential in North American society. It is obvious that the main purpose of these commercials is to sell products. Integrated into the commercials is the idea of consumerism. Consumerism can be related to mass production and mass consumption. In order to make large amounts of profit, North American companies would have to mass produce and in result, encourage the audience to mass consume.
