The Elements of Sound

Sound is one of the key elements of life. Not only is it an element in life, but one of the must important aspects of filmmaking. A film is not considered a great hit without having a great source of sound involved. Though we might think of a film as an essentially visual experience, we really cannot afford to underestimate the importance of sound in a film. Three of the most important parts of sound that compose the sound track in a film, are the spoken words, sound effects, and the music. A great way of describing the three aspects of sound would be through a movie. A movie the everyone has seen, least once in their life, that would be Star Wars, A New Hope, directed and written by George Lucas, in 1977. I would consider a New Hope the greatest and best example to explain the aspects of sound. A New Hope begins with a rebel ship being boarded by Darth Vader, the cu

Darth Vader had an excellent voice for his character. His uncle disagrees with Luke's plans of moving on his life, like the rest of his friends. Luke lives with his aunt and uncle on a farm on Tatooine. Throughout the movie sound is used to the best of knowledge. His voice went well with his physical appearance; it made him stand out more. It's usually not meant to be noticeable; it provides a tone to the scenes or the characters. When Dark Vader approach the scene or when danger was about to come dissonant music was used to indicate the appearance. At scenes, the only thing that one could hear would be the footsteps, which brought excitement to the audience. A good example of dialogue in the movie would by the character of Darth Vader. The action starts when Luke, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Ben Kenobi attempt to rescue Princess Leia from the command of the Dark Star. Especially the footsteps of the character made the movie better. Making the audience think of what or who was approaching into the scene. Starting off with the dialogue, it presents the speaker as an individual, rather than the imaginary creation of a story. Combining the three parts of sound, the dialog, the sound effects and the music only outcomes a great hit like Stars Wars.
