Red Riding hood VS the Wolf

The Little Red Riding Hood is one of the most studied and interpreted fairytales. This fairytale has many variants and problematizing interpretation, that is, which version is considered by folklorists as the “authoritative” version of the tale. The Little Red Ridding Hood has a widespread and controversial history. “This fairytale is a multi-voiced, multi-cultural tale that has been told and retold, suffering endless plot and character morphing and reinterpretation” (Reconstruction). The three books that I have chosen are, Little Red Cap, adapted by Evalyn Kinkead and illustrated by E. Probst, Yo, Hungry Wolf, A Nursery Rap, by David Vozar, illustrated by Betsy Lewin and The Wolf’s Tale, by Della Rowland, illustrated by Michael Montgomery. There are many differences in these three books I have chosen, the illustrations styles, the audience level and the genres of the books.

The illustrations in the book Little Red Cap, by E. Probst are very graphic, too graphic for the younger aged children. The illustration style is expressionism, this is shown in the way the illustrator distorted the shape and size of The Wolf’s head. There is also a touch of impressionism in the glow of The Wolf’s e

. . .
The characters are different in how they are portrayed. The author does a good job at meeting the audience’s age group. Others change the story up based on the audience level they are trying to reach, softening the story for young children for example. In contrast, Kinkead’s Little Red Riding Hood is depicted as a sweet girl who was loved by everyone. They all take place in the forest and at grandma’s house, although, The Wolf’s Tale does add another location which was the wolf den where he goes to hide from red Riding Hood. Rowland and Kinkead portray the “hero” as a hunter with a gun, whereas, Vozar portrays him as a woodsman with an ax. On the other hand, Vozar’s characters are hip, rapping and rhyming. For instance, Red’s cape is a bold red and her hair is bright gold. Red is so forceful that she causes The Wolf to hide in his den. In the end William forced to move to another part of the forest and is considered to be a hero to the other wolves because of the human’s version of the tale. This book should be not only for the preoperational but for the concrete and formal operations as well due the vocabulary. Probst then used the crayons to give it color. Now, The Wolf’s Tale is written for preoperational and concrete stages.
