Year Round Schooling

I remember when I was in first grade. Spelling test, science fairs, and summer vacation. The best part of school was the summer vacation. But when I changed schools the next year, there wouldn’t be any more summer vacation. The school district I was transferring to participated in year-round education. What where these school officials thinking? I mean, kids need a break from the tests and that unusual cafeteria food sometime during the year, so why not have a summer vacation? Now I hear schools across the country are plann

. . .

And if that wasn’t bad enough, my younger sister attended a charter that had a traditional school calendar.

There is a number of ways the year round school can operate: 90/30, 60/20, and as I mentioned before 45/15. ing on using the year-round schooling. Of course that isn’t true of today in most parts of the country, but some high school student do use their summer vacation to work and bring in extra money to the household. So, instead of me watching my little sister during the summer while my mother was at work, she [my mother] had to cough up money for daycare since the charter school had no summer program. At the time I experienced year-round schooling, I was on the 45/15 schedule. So as you can see year-round education isn’t as convenient for some as others. I still went to school a total of 180 days like traditional schools, but the only difference was students at my school attended class for 45 days then there’s 15-day break. It said that summer vacation in the past existed since children used to help on the farm during the summer. There are a number of reasons I oppose this decision, which I’ve listed in the following paragraphs. I’ve personally seen and experienced this coming from a low-income family myself. But is year round school really the answer? While researching this topic I came across an article at About. The months of summer were the only time a student such as myself could work full time without having to worry about my studies. I was involved in many activities during the school year and couldn’t work and go to school at the same time.
