A Separate Peace
The main characters in A Separate Peace are all different in a couple of ways. Finny is an iconoclast, Gene is a cynic, Brinker is an elitist and Leper is a nonconformist. These four friends had an amazing year. Gene and Finny were roommates at Devon school. They were instantly the best of friends. Finny broke his leg and was never again allowed to play any form of a sport. Finny acts like he doesn't mind and concentrates on getting Gene into the Olympics. Gene thinks Finny is trying to destroy his studying habits. Leper has enlisted into the army then deserted. Brinker believes he is the boss and is in many clubs. The four friends get along great, but are different in many ways. Gene is a person who believes all men are motivated by selfishness; someone who is scornful of the motives of others; someone who is bitterly mocking. Gene is a cynic. Gene is very sarcastic. "I said a lot of things sarcastically that summer; that was my sarcastic summer, 1942." (Pg. 7) Gene jounces the limb causing Finny to fall. This fall is the first of a chain of events leading up to Finny's death. Gene is jealous of Finny because Finny is popular and is good at everything he does. Gene feels that Finny is trying t
