Drinking on College Campuses

             Whenever young men and women finally break out and start becoming adults and enter their college life, experimentation and self-exploration becomes an intricate part of their experience. Social aspects and environments are a large part of a student's college career. At many social functions, college students will find the presence of alcohol. They are then faced with the decision to drink or not. Drinking is not wrong, however, it can lead to many different serious altercations. In fact, drinking has become a benevolent problem on many college campuses. Many of these students drink excessively and incur the consequences of this, and in some cases develop a problem with drinking.
             For college students, alcohol is a very prevalent substance. It is not uncommon for college students to drink. In fact, over eighty four percent of students have drank in college ("2000 Statistics on Alcohol"). One major problem is that drinking is supposed to be something that all college students do. This has led many students to drink based purely on the fact that everyone does it and it is just the thing that college students do. Many of these students binge drink. Binge drinking is defined as having five or more drinks in one sitting. Almost fifty percent of students polled in the Core Survey conducted in 2000 admitted to binge drinking within two weeks of taking the survey. Binge drinking has been the source of many troubles. Many students have become very ill and some have even died due to alcohol poisoning as a result of binge drinking, "Alcohol depresses nerves that control involuntary actions such as breathing and the gag reflex (which prevents choking). A fatal dose of alcohol will eventually stop these functions" ("College Drinking", 2003). Vomiting usually occurs because the body is trying to rid itself of the toxins in its stomach.
