Journey
The inner journey of one's self leads us into a greater understanding of life which would help us feel gratitude for both the positives and negatives in our lives. The understanding of one's inner self is demonstrated through the ideas of self development. This is complemented through personal identity which is displayed in My Place by Sally Morgan where the journey gives her a greater understanding of who she is as a person. This idea is shown metaphorically through "Journey to the Interior" by Margaret Atwood as well as in the novel a walk to remember by Nicholas Sparks and the film Dead Poets Society. Each text displays an inner journey which gives both the audience and the characters of the text greater understanding in their lives through the themes of identity, love and conformity. This clearly demonstrates that an inner journey would not only give greater understanding but self satisfaction in life. Both of these reflections are explored in Sally Morgan's non fictional novel My Place which depicts a journey of an Aboriginal girl who knew that in her society it was her 'against the world' because in the context, Aboriginals were not treated with dignity. The first person narration gives a personal view to intrigue the au
She believed that through her mother keeping that secret from her, it had 'hurt you and me and Nan, all of us'. This is shown in one incident when Sally brought her friends over and she would try and hide from them because she was 'black' and she did not want them to think their family were 'boong'. Todd is a character who displays this idea of conformity which is shown by his hesitation to 'seize the day' because of his family who pressures him so to can live up to his brother who was a 'valedictorian'. This is also similar to the novel "A walk to remember where there is also a protagonist who goes on an inner journey to find out a bit more about themselves. This journey is enhanced through the first person narrative style because this introduces personal comments which show the development of Landon, in particular his relationship and love with Jamie. Her story inspired the minor characters of the novel to tell their story, in particular Daisy. She believed that 'if you are white you can do anything'. Landon's development throughout the text was to understand what it meant by the 'Lord's plan' which was represented by Jamie who 'did not take offence' and was 'not resentful. The journey of Atwood explains the journey of the metaphysical and physical world. Jamie's 'acts of goodness' especially in the orphanage help make Landon 'never [feel] so good about anything'. The use of descriptive writing to convey an image of suspense for the audience and it helps them understand the journey of Landon of being in love. It enhances Sally's inner journey and the journeys of the minor characters in the novels. This is what triggered Sally's realisation that she was living her 'whole life in a haze' which influenced her to ask questions about her heritage and why her family did not want to tell her anything about it. The looking up camera angle shot and the gallant music in the background enhances the tone of seizing the day which shows that Keating goals for the students were a success. The idea of love takes everyone on an unforgettable journey where it leads to a greater understand the destination in A walk to remember by Nicholas Sparks, it displays a timeless theme of life-transforming powers of love which captures the journey of Landon Carter where his 'life changed forever'.
