Book Critique-A Delusion of Satan : The Salem Witch Trials
A Delusion of Satan : The Salem Witch Trials by Frances Hill is a book describing the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The book begins introducing the reader to Puritan lifestyle --a very strict religon believing almost any fun is sin, and no sin is too small for punishment. Then they go to describe Salem Village in New England, which is owned in majority by the Putman family. The town is split into almost two sections, one of farmers(rural area outside of the actual markets and town) and one of the actual town(urban). Samuel Parris, the pastor, moved to salem three years before the trials with his wife, three children, niece, Abigail Williams, and his two carribean indian slaves Tituba and John Indian. They also had two other children with them, which was not unusual, a ten-year old boy and a five-year-old girl. Abigail and Betty(one of Parris's children) started having fits, thought to be posesions of satan buy more then likely actually just hysteria. Doctors were called in but nothing could be done. Soon after they thought Abigail and Betty were "under an evil have" the two slaves baked a "witch cake" with the tw . . .
She writes reviews for fiction books, she may have written the book differently then most non-fiction authors who dont have any fiction background. Eventually the entire village turned on each other, almost like a war if somebody has a problem with another they accuse them of witchcraft. Parris will be ousted and leave Salem village. This is one of many of such breaks, i feel this information is useful but perhaps better for notes in the back of the book or similar. I liked the references to modern days, like on page 81 referring the trial scene as a scene from Alice in Wonderland. With the amount of information given I tended to forget names and sometimes confuse them, it did not help that Hill changed topics alot. The first accused church member was Martha Cory, accused of bewitching the three. The author takes a radical approach on the topic making her own twist on it. It contains an epiloague, list of key people, chronology, a list of everyone who died, nots, bibliography, and an index. The book, from what i know, is very well documented and ,from the references to other historians etc, well researched. For example on page 29 Hill drifts off and talks about how wichcraft have enfluenced alot of western europe and brings a quote from G. You can tell the author spent alot of time researching because the bibilography is long, including old and modern books, biographys, and diaries. Eventually Tituba and neighbors Sarah Good and Sarah Osbourne were areested for hurting the two children. Eventually 20 people were hanged, 4 people died in jail, and hundreds were sent to jail. It may have in fact been too detailed, as I many times was found lost.
