The Inferno
Dante is a man that one day found himself in the dark wood of error. He wanted to reach the Mount of Joy, but in order to do so he must first descend into Hell. Virgil, his guide who represents "Human Reason", takes Dante through the gates of Hell where they find the first sinners of Hell being tormented. Then they cross Acheron, the first river of Hell, with the aid of Chiron, the beastly boatman of this river. Now they arrive upon the first circle of upper Hell. Dante describes how Hell is a funnel shaped cave that lies below the Northern Hemisphere. Also, he explains how Hell is made of up many ledges which he calls circles, and each circle has its own type of sinner, and its own unique punishment for that sinner. The first circle, which is where they are now, is called the Limbo . The sinners in this place are the Virtuous Pagans, whom died before the time of Jesus Christ. This place is the highest level man can achieve without the grace of God. The sinners here are not tormented at all, but are left with the fact tha
Also I like this Canto because this is where Dante gives his discrete description of Hell. Dante described that he recognized many philosophers and poets here such as: Socrates, Plato, and Ptolemy. I am not sure if Dante would judge souls that are killed before birth, such as abortion, because it was not invented until later on in history. I chose this Canto because in my mind, what I have been told about Hell, I didn't think there was a place in Hell where a soul was not tormented. t they have no hope of ever leaving this place. Dante sees the "Master Souls" of this place gathered together on a green. It seems that Dante does this because he is trying to portray poets as good wholesome people that mean no harm to anyone. I think he would judge them as Virtuous Pagans because they have not received a Christian baptism. While Dante is taking his voyage in Hell, Virgil keeps reminding him that he should not have any pity for any of the sinners. In my own imagination I could see the Limbo as a very enchanted and peaceful place, but that is not what many would expect to see if they visited Hell because many think of Hell as a fiery pit or a monstrous dungeon. He is amazed at this sight, but also keeps in mind that this place is nothing compared to the kingdom of God. Dante makes this place out to be the "Heaven in Hell", having their own Citadel where the Virtuous Pagans gather. I do agree with Dante about Hell having many different degrees of punishment for each type of sinner. Virgil is greeted by four poets, for this is the place where he is from and will spend the rest of eternity, and they take him and Dante to the Citadel of Human Reason.
