A Comaprison between France and AmericaThere are few countries in the world that share as similar governmental structures as the United States and France. It would be expected, however, that France and America would share such similarities in government based upon the fact that the original French Constitution was inspired by the U.S. constitution. Like America, France has an Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branch. However, the processes by which tasks are carried out by each of these branches are all slightly different from that of the United States. It is for this reason that the comparison of these two countries is so interesting; broadly speaking, both governments appear very similar, however, when looked at more closely there are smaller distinctions that keep them separate and unique. While examining the smaller differences between both countries, the chief distinction between the two governments--the political party system-will be discussed in detail. France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Another institutional reason for the two-party system in the United States is that only the two major parties in power have passed the laws. The National Assembly is the principle legislative body in France and consists of 577 seats and each deputy is elected by popular vote. Supreme Court, the Constitutional Council only considers legislation that is referred by the Parliament, the president, or the prime minister. France is a culture, which is very pluralist in nature. 38 %, the highest among any other country in Europe and the life expectancy rate, at birth, is 78 years. France also has an extremely high immigration rate; more than one million Muslims immigrated to France during 1960's. Both of these practices represent an active checks and balances system. In conclusion, while there are many similarities between France and the United States, major differences do exist. American voters place ballots for party electors, who in turn vote for the President and Vice-President. Plurality voting forces interest groups to work within the parameter of one of the two major parties. One of the major reasons for the differing party systems in each country is the difference in size and population. The Court of Cassation only considers appeals on procedural grounds. Like the legislative branch of America, the French legislative branch is bi-cameral.
