THE PIGMAN CRITICAL LENS

One once said, "A friend in need is a friend indeed". I feel this quote means that a person with little on no friends will be a true friend for the fact that they don't have an abundance of friends, thus loosing a single one would be critical. I agree with this quote and feel that people with few friends will be truer or easier going just to keep a friendship. I myself have seen people with few friends who treat those few people with a greater respect and agree with most everything they say, just to keep their friendship. The book The Pigman by Paul Zindel directly relates to the quote above in many ways.
The Pigman by Paul Zindel revolves around an old man, Mr. Pignati, and two high school kids, John and Lorraine. Mr. Pignati or the Pigman, is characterized as a lonely old man who has little or no friends. John and Lorraine meet the Pigman by playing a game in which they call random people and try to keep them on the phone the longest. They lie to Mr. Pignati and tell him they are from a charity, and they ask for a donation. Mr. Pignati says he will donate ten dollars. When John and Lorraine go to pick up their money, they almost feel sorry for the Pigman, in a sense that he seemed very lonely. Since meeting Mr. Pignati, They went to his house almost everyday and even skipped school for it. Since Mr. Pignati was lonely he did many different things to keep himself appealing to John and Lorraine, This included making jokes, acting like a child, buying John and Lorraine things, as well as just talking to them. Overall Mr. Pignati was a lonely person who just needed a few friends who he could interact with and talk to.
The quote "A friend in need is a friend indeed" is one which I feel corresponds to the book The Pigman by Paul Zindel. True friends are those who arise in times of need, and not disappear. I feel this quote also relates to the real world and goes to show that taking some time to talk to a lo...
