The Eternal Clock of Life
"... Tick-tock, seven o' clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o' clock" (Bradbury 1057)! The first form of telling the time used the sun to function-these were used before 1000 BC (Bailey 2). For over three thousand years we have relied on the sun or a battery operated way to measure time. Human's lives are dictated and revolve around the clock. There are more reasons why the clock was invented then to just tell time. Some believe that that one of the first mechanical clocks was invented in Italy by a monk to call people in to worship (Bailey 2). These clocks where placed inside the church usually in the belfry and there was no hands on it to indicate time it was only there to ring in the hours and call people to worship (Bailey2). Humans tend to set a tight schedule and without a clock to tell time many people would be late for important occasions. For example you go to college till three o' clock but you have a business meeting at five o' clock. Of course you want to be a little early so you don't miss it so you plan to get there ten minutes early. Without a clock you would not know how long to wait afte
r three o' clock before heading to your meeting. This could be why people stuck to their own land and did not wonder to far from the church clocks. They were portable but inconveniently large to be carried on the person. In the modern sense time is so accurate that we live our lives by the nanoseconds. During the last thirty years timekeeping has grown by leaps and bounds (clocks). The future brings many faster more accurate clocks in which we will use to schedule our hectic lives. Previous to 1283 people could not accurately tell time they had to rely on what is called water clocks. In fact, in the next few years clock makers may outdo themselves" (Stix 3). Instead of using cesium for atomic clocks researchers have designed concepts of atomic clocks that run off of calcium and mercury creating a more accurate time measurement (Wayt 1). People back in the early 1600's stayed near home due to the fact that if they left home they have no way of telling time due to the bulkiness of the clocks and difficulties in transporting one so they can be on time and productive everyday. Relatively recent was the inventing of the atomic clock. However when 1283 rolled around England installed hands on a church tower clock [, and ever since people have been able to tell time and accordingly schedule their day to fit] (Bailey 2).
