Short Story Essay
Ones siblings can play a large role in the development of ones personality and the qualities one displays. The sibling's influence on the main characters was evident in First Confession, The Stone Boy, and I Stand Here Ironing. In these stories the actions and personalities of the siblings proved to have a profound affect on the way the character acted, and thought which determined how the story was to unravel. Whether the sibling is older or younger, the influence is undeniable and very significant to the plot of the story. The siblings' influence may be moral and helpful however most of the time the siblings play a role that is construed to urge the character into doing something unreasonable and shameful. In First Confession, The Stone Boy, and I Stand Here Ironing the siblings of the main characters had a solid influence: the siblings feeling of superiority; the feeling of seclusion in the main character; even the envy the main character has towards their sibling. These characteristics exists in every sibling relationship however in these circumstances they are inflated to increase their overall value. To begin with the main characters in the three stories feel as though their sibling is superior to them. In every instance

Emily from I Stand Here Ironing also feels unwanted and left out from her large family. "Susan, the second child, Susan, golden and curly haired and chubby, quick and articulate and assured, everything in appearance and manner Emily was not. 26) In their family Susan is "quick and articulate and assured. 26) Emily often feels second-best while being judged against her sister and finds it hard to achieve Susan's level of dominance. the main character has been made to feel small and insignificant compared to their sibling whether they are older or younger. While their siblings live seemingly amazing and ornate lives, it makes sense that the main characters would want to achieve this and would feel jealous if they felt it unattainable. " Arnold is still a young boy and wishes that when he is Eugene's age that he will not be "undersized".
