White Tale Deer

Whitetail Deer can be found all over North America. Deer have the ability to adapt to almost any habitat, making them one of the most overpopulated animals in many parts of the United States. Recently deer have received more attention the normal. This is due to the fact that they are one of the most unpredictable animals in the world. Until recently their behaviors were unknown. The population of deer across America has been growing at tremendous rates, making the species easier to observe. Many people assume hunters are the only ones interested. Farmers and everyday people are affected by the exponential growth of the white tail deer. Crops are diminishing at huge rates. In areas of overpopulation, deer can cause an "over browsing" effect which can destroy most plant species up to six feet. People are being killed by deer related car accidents on a regular basis. These are some things that can possibly be avoided if the public was more informed on the behaviors of deer. The male deer is called a buck and the female deer is called a doe. There are some very distinct differences in their appearances that are good to know. The male buck has what are called antlers. Hunters refer to them as the rack. The bucks wil

They may doze and rest but even when a deer's eyes are closed its senses are aware of any noise and scents in the surrounding area. Doe's, which are the female deer, tend to consume more food then they would normally. When biologists are trying to form hypothesis on population growth they do two things they look at birth and death rates. One is the Hunters for the Hungry Foundation that takes meat that is killed and distributes it to homeless shelters and other places that are in need of food. Over the last five years the officers of the WMA and DNR have monitored the populations very closely. Biologists have proven that any species that grows exponentially for a long period of time is endanger of extinction. The second part of this breeding cycle is the main rut. They are hit by cars, and starve because they aren't familiar with the land and the resources available on it. A Whitetail Deer can rotate its ears making it very easy to pinpoint any sound. This is why many hunters will wait after they see a doe hoping that the male buck will follow. This tends to last as long as the does are in estrus, which is usually about two to four days. The bullet travels faster the sound, so they don't hear the gun go off. Realistically hunting is the only humane way a deer is killed. Man is a deer's primary predator, but we also do a lot to manage the populations in what are called Wildlife Management Areas or WMA. Mountain lions are a very common predator in the Carolinas; here in Georgia the deer have to worry about coyotes and wild dogs.
