Knowing When to Stop
Have you ever wanted something so bad but you couldn't get it? If so, you could relate to the Character Jay Gatsby in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Gatsby desperately desired to be with his long lost love, Daisy. He had big hopes and dreams of rekindling a past romance from before he went to war. With his ruthless attitude towards life, he tries everything to get Daisy from showing her his expensive clothes, to taking the blame for myrtles death. The character Jay Gatsby ultimately leads to his own death through his ambitions, emotions, and obsession. With hope of things being like they used to be, an emotional Gatsby dreams of being reunited with Daisy. Moreover, he stares at a green light that is on Daisy's dock, hoping one day he can be there. Nick is apprehensive at first but Gatsby finally bribes him by agreeing to have Nick's grass cut. Gatsby obsession with Daisy consumes him. Gatsby's ambitious personality takes him to extreme measures. Myrtles husband, George Wilson, got a tip that it was Gatsby's car who hit Myrtle. Nick reminds Gatsby that he cannot recreate. Scared that Daisy will refuse to see him, Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy to tea. " He did not know when to stop and was finally stopped by someone else, forever. His inability to let past go ultimately contributes to his own downfall. Without Daisy knowing, Gatsby intends to come to tea at Nick's house as well, surprising her and forcing her to see him. Gatsby is so caught up in Daisy, he fails to look after himself. Gatsby's emotions overtake his ability to think logically. Without further investigation, Wilson shoots Gatsby. Gatsby also points out that Tom has not been faithful in their marriage. He believes Daisy is only attracted to money and that is the only reason why she married Tom, yet, he tries to impress her by showing her his fancy cars as well as his clothes.
