The Disease of Obesity

             Obesity is a disease that affects about one-third of the American population (approximately 60 million Americans). To be classified as obese, one must have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. Obesity is the second leading cause of death in America and is also the cause of other diseases such as type two diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Along with causing these diseases, obesity can also create specific mobility issues. In some cases, the person's weight has gotten so out of control that the person can't walk from one end of the house to the other without needing to rest or can't even get out of his bed. Why does obesity continue to increase even though it causes many problems and can even lead to death? Is it the inattention to healthy eating? Could one have a genetic predisposition to obesity? Or could it be because of the way one was raised?
             Is obesity caused by the public's inattention or ignorance to basic healthy lifestyles? (Even though approximately 60 million Americans are obese, it seems that there is not enough media coverage, and the public isn't getting all the information it needs to make intelligent decisions about healthy lifestyles.) The public is always hearing about various miracle diets, like the Atkins diet. Most know the basic outline of the Atkins diet; you can eat anything you want, stay away from carbohydrates like bread, rice, or pasta. Most don't know that you tend to lose the nutrients that can only come in those foods without bread, rice, pasta, and other carbohydrates. While you may have lost the weight, you may have caused another disease to happen (Many people aren't informed enough to start an Atkins diet plan, and when they start one, they could potentially do more damage to their body.)
             Could a specific genetic predisposition cause obesity to gain weight and not keep it off? Some believe that his genes determine every part of a person's life. It makes sense because...
