Like Water for Chocolate

The first approach I will use to analyze these two films is the appreciative approach. Washington Square does not suggest a sense of great morals or values in the opening scene because of the way Austin, the father reacts towards his daughter. Austin wants nothing to do with his daughter not only because he wished for a son but because he is upset about his wife’s death and blame his daughter for his loss. Later on in the film though, Catherine shows a sense of values when she rejects Morris and refuses to take him back. Comparing and contrasting Like Water for Chocolate to Washington Square I found that they are somewhat similar. In Like Water for Chocolate, Tita is forbidden to marry or have children until after her mother's

What classes, groups or movements appear? It is clear that when you compare and contrast these two films through this approach they are different, but I will point out certain things that distinguish each. In Like Water for Chocolate it is very clear that the family has a different racial background and is also not represented in the upper class. death because of family tradition and Tita agrees to this. There is also the obvious themes of love and desire with Pedro and Tita and betrayal is mixed in when John comes into the picture. Of course this story is very much about love having many scenes about Morris and Catherine’s relationship. Sloper has and because of his occupation.

The second approach I will use is the thematic approach. This comparison is very obvious and easy to explain. All of this is going against the family tradition and show low values. I believe that both Washington Square and Like Water for Chocolate have a quite similar major theme and central topics. Washington Square promotes and shows the upper to middle class in the middle of the nineteenth century and this known because of the help that Dr. Like Water for Chocolate has a lot of betrayal involved, for example Pedro leaves and Tita is rebellious and ignores all of her household chores and betrays her mother. In Washington Square the father encourages marriage and In Like Water for Chocolate the mother discourages. The third approach I am going to use to compare these two films is sociological.
