Bioinformatics
BIOINFORMATICS Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology; computer science and IT combine to form a single discipline. Bioinfomatics involves biology, which encompasses the study of proteins generated from sequence of genes and from which, all living organisms are composed. Computer science in Bioinfomatics helps to predict 3d structure of proteins, amino acid sequence, functions of proteins with the help of algorithms and data banks Information technology has proved to be boon in research area of Bioinformatics by providing tools to share the useful information universally accessible and retrievable through Internet. The emerging field of Bioinformatics uses information storage, data analysis and clusters for large scale computing to deal with the mass of information on decoded genes. Bioinformatics will permit the rational creation of new crops, and in general accelerate the unraveling of fundamental biological processes Bioinfomatics, the use of computers in biology research, has been increasing in importance during the past decade as the Human Genome Project went from its beginning to
Since 3 bases code for 1 amino acid, the protein coded by an average-sized gene (3000 bp) will contain 1000 amino acids. The two DNA strands are held together by weak bonds between the bases. INVOLVEMENT OF COMPUTERS: - Advanced technology has produced means of reading genes (DNA) almost like barcodes. APPLICATIONS: HUMAN GENOME PROJECT - This project is an ambitious project in Bioinformatics, which deals with decoding of human genes. During this step, mRNA goes through different types of maturation including one called splicing when the non-coding sequences are eliminated. Amino acids are added one by one, translated into polypeptide sequences dictated by DNA and represented by mRNA. As a result, crop harvest can increase and special plants can be engineered to alleviate food shortages in developing countries. " Thus Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology, computer science and IT combined to form a single discipline. There is big need for the unfailing prediction of 3-d protein structure from sequence data because of difficult and expensive methods like X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. Hence to store this large quantity of information vast computer databanks are needed. * Medical informatics:- It involves the study, invention and implementation of structures and algorithms to improve communication, understanding and management of medical information. This field is referred as Bioinformatics and involves the use internet tools, artificial intelligence and other computational methods toC assist in storing and analyzing data generated from DNA sequencing. It is expected that information technology will continue to provide rapid advances to make genome research more efficient leading to better methods of diagnosing diseases, indentifying beneficial straits and providing cures for crops, animals, and human diseases. Each chromosome contains many genes, the basic physical and functional units of heredity.
