Immigrants

People come to the United States because United States offered opportunity and a chance for growth and economic gain. They were by war, famine, economic hardship, or religious or political persecution to leave their homelands. They are forced to come here. Some slaves are sent to America and sold as slaves. The welfare reform bill of 1996, is legal immigrants who are not U.S. military veterans or have not worked and paid taxes inthe United States for at least 10 years are prohibited from any Supplemental Security Income or food stamp benefits. Legal immigrants who arrived after August 22, 1996, are prohibited from receiving most federal benefits during their first five years in the country. After the five year ban, new immigrants who have sponsors must include their sponsor's income when applying for federal benefits. Students are eligible for school lunch programs as long as they are legally eligible for free public education. Illegal immigrants are ineligible for federal, states, and local public benefits. No more than 675,000 legal immigrants are allowed to enter the Ubited States annually. (This figure remains the same as in the 1990 legislation).
